We started Sommelier because the wine app market was — bluntly — full of chat boxes wearing mascots. Crowd-sourced scores. Five-star averages. A 92-point number from a critic who has never sat at your table. The bottle in your hand is between you and the night — not a marketplace.
So we built the opposite. A patient, opinionated companion that learns your palate in eight sips and respects that learning forever. It will argue with you, politely. It will remember the Beaujolais you didn't like in 2024. It will nudge you about the Pontet-Canet sitting in your cellar the week it reaches its peak.
A wine app should be quiet.
There are already enough things in your phone competing for attention. A wine companion shouldn't gamify your drinking, push notifications about a stranger's cellar, or sell you on the "trending" bottle of the month. Ours opens, helps, and gets out of the way.
"The bottle is the point. The phone is a candle." — From the founding note, 2024
How we work.
- Your palate is yours. We don't sell it, train external models on it, or share it with importers without you saying yes.
- Slow over splashy. Six features done with care beat sixty done with mascots and confetti.
- Words matter. Every fixed line of copy in the app is written and edited by people who have worked a floor. The personal work — recommendations, label readings, tasting notes, chat replies — is generated by AI, under the safeguards set out in our Terms.
- Open data, where we can. Drinking-window models and pairing rationales are documented; you can read the why.
Who we are.
A team of five — two engineers, a sommelier, a designer, and a writer — working out of a sunlit room above a wine bar in Miami. We ship slowly, eat well, and only open a bottle when there's something to celebrate (so, most Fridays).
Talk to us.
We're easiest to reach by email: hello@asksommelier.ai. We read everything. We try to answer within a working day. We're not a chatbot — yet.
